Anthropology Series: Goth Therapy

Those PCB's (Pale Chicks in Black) in high school? they weren't just posing -- they were part of a huge support group:
About half of teenage goths have deliberately harmed themselves or attempted suicide, a new study suggests. But joining the modern subculture – which grew out of the 1980s gothic rock scene – may actually protect vulnerable children, researchers say.

The study followed 1258 young people who were interviewed at ages 11, 13, 15 and 19. It found that of those who considered themselves goths, 53% had self-harmed and 47% had tried to commit suicide. The average prevalence of self-harm among young people in the UK is 7% to 14%. Self-harm includes behaviours such as cutting or burning oneself. And about 6% of young people admit suicide attempts. Some studies suggest the incidence is rising in society. . . .

“One common suggestion is they may be copying subcultural icons or peers [when they self-harm], but our study found that more young people reported self-harm before, rather than after, becoming a goth. This suggests that young people with a tendency to self-harm are attracted to the goth subculture,” says Robert Young, who led the study.

“Rather than posing a risk, it's also possible that by belonging to the goth subculture, young people are gaining valuable social and emotional support from their peers.” But he cautions: “However, the study was based on small numbers and replication is needed to confirm our results.” Only 25 participants felt strongly associated with goth culture.

i was slightly obsessed with the goths in high school, those aloof eternally hip who stood out like pseudo-celebs at our school (mrs. octopus' same school!)...i was such a poser on a few days too, i would wear all black and generously apply my revlon blackberry lipstick (my mom yelled at me everytime thinking i looked "dead"). a few years later, in college, i ran into one of them at a coffee shop in my neighborhood...she had light blue jean overalls on and no make-up, i was so sad that she was no longer the gothic princess she once was.

Yes, I've heard this before too. That story said that it is because as a subculture, they are more accepting than, say, the stereotypical prep or jock.
hh, she sounds like an artist. Haha, trust me, you don't want to get paint and such all over your $50+ corset. ^_^

The study clearly doesnt show whether those who answered yes, about self harm, turned to goth lifestyle before or after their attempts, they might seek to the goth lifestyle because of it.

I know a couple of goth, and they're nice as a herd of sheep.

GOTHS,
do NOT hurt themselves EMOS hurt themselves.
YOU ARE COMPLETELY PROVING THE POINT THAT NO ONE ACTUALLY KNOWS WHAT GOTH IS!!!!

Goth is when people worship or idol certain things like demons or if they are strong goths the Devil. as a goth myself i do NOT yet worship the devil.SOONER OR LATER CHAZZ....

Another example of someone who has no idea what goth is. people these days tend to love to clump Goth and Emo together. they are not the same!
this article did not really make sense

You have got to be kidding me!

Even the one who claims to be goth... give me a break.

Yes, alot of people steriotype the Gothic culture.

No, we do not worship demons or the devil, I believe the term that you are looking for there, would be "Santanic" or "Satanists".

Goth is more than just looks or appearances, it is who people are as a person. It is a subculture. There aren't standards. Any one can be gothic, not just those that heavily apply make-up, or dress in black and corsets. Yes, I wear my fair share of black, corsets, and makeup, but I have enough Gothic friends who would never be suspected. The girl in the blue overalls is my friend {figuratively, of course} and she is still a gothic princess.

The Gothic Culture, has been around, and thrived for longer than any other subgenre.
Goth truly is about the music.
Living the music, and Thanatos.

Do ANY of you know who Thanatos is?

Only truly truly true goths know who he is.

Thanatos is the Greek god of Death, Who the ENTIRE gothic culture is based around!

Also, I would just like to mention, Goth has many different styles... Everything from PUNK to RENNAISSANCE, to MEDIEVAL.

Get your fucking facts straight, before you go parading around what you "think" is goth.

Well i dunno i wear black alot but i dont really think im goth. See mostly black just reflects my mood and my life basically sucks at the moment so black generally goes with my mood. And yeah it is the emos who self-harm and stuff.

OK. People are saying emos selfharm. No. That is what the media and people that dont know much about the genre have said and say. Yes. SOME emos selfharm, some goths do too. Heck! It doesnt matter what genre you are connected to. Garenteed that every genre has a few people in it that have self harmed. I myself, will admit, that I am one of those who self harmed AND tried suicide before being classified as a goth. I am who I am. I wont change for anyone and dont epect anyone to change for me! I have friends that are "so called" gothic, emo, chav good god knows what! Goths dont always worship satan or devils. Thats stuff is made up by the media and people who dont know enough about the genre. The gothic genre was originally formed in the 80's, but means alot more than just music now! Yeah sure! Music is a big deal in the gothic genre, but theres other things that are included too. To really know what is considered "gothic" its better for you to find out and experiance it for yourself. This is because the word and genre og goth (ic) means quite something else to each person. The best way to find out what it means to you is to just be polite and considerate with an open mind (forget what you have been told is gothic) and just ask a goth to show you the ropes, the 411, the ins and outs. Almost all goths will be open to showing and helping you. They are great people once you get to know them. One thing they dont like is mainstream, people that follow each other! Be yourself. Be open. Dont do something just because some one else has. Do it because YOU want to. Two words of advice when speaking to a goth or hanging out/spending time with a group of goths: BE YOURSELF! They will respect you much more if you are yourself.

As several people have said, you are just more proof that people have no idea how to differenciate between the stereotpyes--which the media created. Sad, you can't smell your own sh*t on your knees. (In the words of Marilyn Manson.) Dude, seriously, as the phrase goes, emos cut themselves, goths cut others. (not literally, but point made) Goth gets mixed with punk as well, trust me we are two ENTIRELY different breeds. And besides, not all emos cut! It's not a logical, "Oh, they're cool I'm gonna go do what they're doing and cut myself." thing. Only posers are that way--and they're generally hated by real goths, emos, and punks. "You either is or you ain't." --Keith Richards. People, learn about what you're saying before you embarass yourself and anyone who knows you.

I am 27 and very much am goth. i agree with you completly. I unfortunatly tried my hardest to fit into "mainstream" highschool. I never felt quite right and had 6 suicide attempts with a few comas. I never belonged and I knew it. Since getting out of school I have embraced my darkside. I love me and all goths. Now there are a few that have blood fetishes and will resort to hurting ourselves but for the blood no other purpose. I still am amazed by the amount of people that don't understand the differences in our sub-culture.

OMG!!! I am so pissed! I have been for my whole life! my parents are goth too. my family and i have never tried to commit sucide or ever wanted to! all the stariotypes say we all want to die and stuff like that; it's so not true! people at my middle school(I'm 13) think i always want to cut myself and die. i try to tell them that that wanting to die and cutting your self is emo not goth! but they never listen! sometimes i fell like a real outcast. but then i remember that i am unique in a dark kinda way...

ur guys study is a total fail

Goths main attributes are to like those below

blood
darkness(dark rooms and night)
death
skulls
demons
black clothes

there sub-branch next to it but its what differency the type of goth

about hurting-self and the thoughts of suicide its only for about 20-40% of goth population(not sure of the correct % but it should be around it)

ppl hurting self are related to 2 main case normally...Emotionnal person(an Emo) or ppl with heart broken...the third case is ppl copying what they see someone do

ppl thinking of suicide are normally people that had a bad life as a child or that dislike life....or heart broken...

some rare time those that had bad life or that dislike life would become goth(known as a goth born due to life events, that has turn that way seeing it as best choice after been reject//has reject life)

the natural born goths are those that has attraction for the attributes i wrote aboves since the age of 6-10

I'd have to agree that again people confuse goths to emo's and scene kids, people goth is not about how you dress or look or how much dark make up you can wear, its about the life style and personality more than anything, emo is a form of self hating poser that tries to be what most people today refer to as "Goth"
Learn the facts before you try to do study's on a social life that isnt even stable to begin with, with all sorts of stero types that put everyone in a place. A person is a person who are you to know what is "Goth" or what isnt.
